Route 69 -- Blues Mandolin
Please visit http://www.jimrichter.com Here's some little impromptu thing I came up with this AM to demonstrate blues soloing up the neck. I think this is one of the things that distinguishes my playing from other blues mandolinists, who tend to play out of open position. For me, playing up the neck--in this case out of G--allows me much better fingerings for a lot of the guitar elements that I bring to my blues mandolin playing--especially in regards to things like chokes, slides, and vibrato. Also, one you learn the box patterns up the neck, there is no key that is undoable. I play with guys who routinely go from F to Bb to F# so you quickly find ways to keep up. To a great degree, this is the kitchen sink for me for this type of playing. As anyone, I keep learning and growing and picking up new ideas.
