 | Crèche tekent bezwaar aan tegen zenderen zeehond PIETERBUREN - De zeehondencrèche in Pieterburen tekent bezwaar aan tegen het zenderen van zeehonden. De provincie Friesland heeft onderzoeksinstituut Imares op Texel opnieuw voor drie jaar toestemming gegeven om zeehonden uit te rusten met een zender. Imares wil zo het gedrag van zeehonden bestuderen. Volgens de crèche in Pieterburen heeft deze studie geen zin, omdat zeehonden met zenders zich niet natuurlijk gedragen. Uit onderzoek is gebleken dat de zenders zelfs zeer schadelijk zijn voor de dieren. Zeehonden zijn gestroomlijnde beesten, die als een raket door het water gaan. Door de zender verandert de stroming rondom de zeehond en moet die meer moeite doen om voedsel te vangen. Tegelijkertijd verbruikt de zeehond door de zender meer energie, waardoor het dier vermagert en zelfs kan verhongeren. |

 | Helicopter Surveys When Polarstern cruises through sea-ice, we complement our shipbased counts of marine birds and mammals with surveys from the helicopter. The reason is that when in ice, the ship often searches an erratic track through leads in the ice, whereas for good surveys it is crucial to sample the water en ice-landscape in an unbiased straight transect line. So, weather permitting, we make a flight once a day, taking us about a hundred kilometres to the north or south and back. Such a flight takes about two hours and to be honest, that is more than enough. Ears are pounding from the loud noises and ones eyes nearly drop out from searching penguins and seals in an ice landschape flashing along with a speed of 100 km per hour.  | Blauwe Vinvis ontmoet onderzoekers IMARES op zuidpool Tijdens helicopter-tellingen hadden wij het geluk een blauwe vinvis te ontmoeten (onderzoek met Polarstern ANT-24-2 op de zuidpool). Een eeuw geleden bevolkten meer dan 200.000 Blauwe Vinvissen de oceanen. Deze reus onder de walvissen, met een lengte van 25-30 meter en gewicht van ruim 100 ton was doelwit van walvisjacht. In korte tijd werd de soort bijna uitgeroeid. Ondanks het stopzetten van de jacht heeft nog geen herstel plaatsgevonden en resteren er nog rond de 10.000 dieren. Blue Whale meets imares researchers in the Antarctic ice During one of our helicopter surveys we were fortunate enough to have an encounter with a Blue Whale (Polarstern voyage ANT-24-2). The animal was searching for food in ice fields where the research with our special under-ice net SUIT demonstrates concentrations of krill. A century ago, over 200.000 Blue Whales populated our oceans. Unfortunately, this giant whale of 25-30 m in length and over 100 tonnes in weight, was the first target of whale hunting. Probably around 10.000 of these remarkable creatures now remain. |
