Central Plains Water wants to consruct a dam at Coalgate in Canterbury, New Zealand ,flood the Waianiwaniwa Valley and divert water from the Waimakariri and Rakaia rivers to irrigate marginal farming land so that it may be farmed more intensively. This means cows instead of sheep. The Waianiwaniwa is a lush and fertile ecosystem that does not ineed rrigation and is full of heritage trees and some of the best preserved wetlands in Canterbury. These are inhabited by those elusive and rare creatures called mudfish.

Ethiopia Dam Controversy (1 of 2)
The government of Ethiopia has done all it can to speed up the construction of the Gilgel Gibe III Dam. It is hoped that the dam will double the country's electrical capacity and thus provide much-needed energy to the people. However, there very real fears that construction of the Dam may put the existence of people down river (both in Ethiopia and across the border in Kenya) at risk.
