Barbara Morgan KD5VNP Ham Radio Pass on ISS

Title:
Barbara Morgan KD5VNP Ham Radio Pass on ISS

Description:
Amateur radio contact with teacher-astronaut Barbara Morgan (KD5VNP) on ISS (NA1ISS) through a southern Australian station operated by Tony VK5ZAI via Echolink from Idaho. Barbara answered questions from students at McCall-Donnelly School District in McCall, Idaho, where Barbara taught before becoming an astronaut. Earlier attempt was made about 90 minutes before but they successfully made contact on the second pass. Many thanks to NASA for providing another window of opportunity. ARISS, Amateur Radio on the International Space Station: With the help of Amateur Radio clubs and ham radio operators, space shuttle astronauts speak over the ham airwaves while in orbit. They talk directly with large groups of the general public, showing teachers, students, parents and communities how Amateur Radio energizes youngsters about science, technology, and learning. ARISS is sponsored by the American Radio Relay League (ARRL), the Radio Amateur Satellite Corporation (AMSAT), and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). ARISS School Application Form to organize a radio contact with ISS, see http://www.arrl.org/ARISS/ariss-ap.html Additional comment by me: Barbara Morgan is the first non-engineer/non-scientist/non-pilot to travel into space. All others including those that paid $20M to ride the Soyuz all have engineering and science degrees (Barbara has a BA degree in Human Biology which not previously acceptable by astronaut office). In a post-flight news conference, Barbara said being an astronaut is not "harder" than a teacher, it has different challenges. Her background is quite different than other astronauts so her perspective is quite different. I think this is so cool and look forward to hear more from Barbara as she shares her experience in space travel.
