Orchards in Mallorca, Spain

Title:
Orchards in Mallorca, Spain

Description:
These are a few videos from my holiday in Mallorca (Majorca) the largest of Spain's Balearic islands in the Mediterranean, halfway betwen Europe and Africa. The quality isn't great but I share them in case they are of any interest. I know some viewers are from sunnier countries where oranges, lemons, figs, olives, almonds and even dates can be grown. The trees with bulbous pineapple shaped bits are palms, I misspoke and said 'pines' thinking of pineapples. They try to ripen dates on these pams but its not quite hot enough. Don't ask me how to care or these fruit trees as I don't know! But it was pleasant to see so many small mixed orchards, often with sheep, goats, pigs or chickens.

sawfly again
Apple sawfly adults mate and lay eggs on baby apples (fruitlets) in early spring. These hatch out leading to visible ribbon like scars often crescent shaped around small fruitlets. The growing maggot leaves the fruitlet it started in and burrows into ad destroys another adjacent fruitlet, they go to the centre and eat the nutrient-rich pips. It is worth destroying affected fruitlets to stop the larvae maturing and pupating to hatch out and repeat the cycle next year. Keeping chickens under ...
Lorrette style summer pruning-1
Louis Lorette developed and described a style of pruning in which a lot of the new growth was removed in summer. Sounds weird, but it works. Like I said earlier, each year we should see new extension growth of leaders and laterals, fruit bud formation on 1 year old and older leaders and laterals, and actual fruit on previously produced and ripened fruit buds, BUT keeping these in balance does not mean we see these three features in the same proportion every year. I can't totally explain the ...
cider apple 2 months after grafting over
This tree was doing OK but I had plenty of the particular variety and wanted to add a new variety of old English cider apple, in this case Broxwood Foxwhelp. Grafting over (otherwise known as top working)is a helpful technique which I have covered in other videos, apologies to anyone who isn't interested but I know a few of you have tried this at home and this is just another little demonstration to show what it should look like. PS the sad specimen of a top worked tree I featured on ...
Barbeque & Garden Talk
THE ARTICLE: Several years ago, I had a man seeking asparagus for a friend who had cancer. He gave me a copy of an article, entitled, `Asparagus for cancer' printed in Cancer News Journal, December 1979. I will share it here, just as it was shared with me: 'I am a biochemist, and have specialized in the relation of diet to health for over 50 years..Several years ago, I learned of the discovery of Richard R. Vensal, DDS that asparagus might cure cancer. Since then, I have worked with him on ...
