Take Back the Neighborhood
The Philadelphia neighborhoods of Tacony, East Mayfair, Holmesburg, & Wissinoming have seen a severe decline in the quality of life under the leadership of State Representative Mike McGeehan. It is time for a change. Vote for your neighbor. Vote for Baldwin.
The Next Mayor visits Congreso
The Next Mayor - a partnership of WHYY, the Philadelphia Daily News and the Committee of Seventy - went to the 2007 Election Kick-off event sponsored by Congreso, a nationally recognized, community based non-profit organization that primarily serves the neighborhoods of Eastern North Philadelphia where the majority of the city's Latino population resides. We asked some of the people who attended to suggest priorities for the next mayor.

The Next Mayor - Community Forum 5 on Crime
Throughout 2006, as part of The Next Mayor project, WHYY has been recruiting people from all walks of life, in the city and the suburbs, to come together, sit in small groups and brainstorm with their fellow citizens about what they think the most pressing issues are and suggest possible solutions for the city of Philadelphia and for the Greater Philadelphia region. They met at the WHYY studios on Independence Mall and included movers and shakers, business people, activists, academics and everyday residents just trying to make life better. We gathered groups of people who might not otherwise interact with each other and put them at the same table to hash out what exactly it is they want the candidates for mayor to talk about, putting the focus on issues, not potential candidates. This forum aired in its entirety (60 mins) on WHYY's Wider Horizons Channel, Comcast Digital Cable Channel 242, at 6pm from January 8-12. Check out the "Get Local" section of Comcast's Video On Demand service to see this and any other forums.
Continue its oversight of the program?
Leader Pelosi: "Continue its oversight of the program? There's never been any oversight of the program. The fact is that because there has never been any oversight of the program, there isn't one person in this body, who will vote on this resolution, who can attest to this statement. They're asking us to vote on something that we absolutely cannot attest to. Not any one of you can attest to this as a fact, because it isn't a fact."
The Next Mayor | Issues Forums | Ethics
The Next Mayor project is an innovative, two-year multimedia partnership to focus on the issues - not just the personalities - leading to the 2007 Philadelphia mayor's race. It was created by the Daily News, WHYY and the Committee of Seventy. We took what we what we learned from our travels around the region and identified 16 different issues that are important to the people of Greater Philadelphia. Tune in as we convene panels of experts to talk about those issues. They'll let us know how other cities are tackling those same problems and they'll make suggestions to the next mayor. From the corrupt and contented city government that Lincoln Steffens described 100 hundred years ago to the more recent pay-to-play scandal, Philadelphia politics has a long and storied tradition of ethical lapses. Several of our The Next Mayor Community Forums and independent polls taken during the campaign indicated that the residents of the Greater Philadelphia region are fed up with it. They want the next mayor to restore trust and confidence in the government but aren't exactly sure how he can do that. We talk to the experts for suggestions. Zack Stalberg is President and CEO of the Committee of Seventy, the city's leading good government advocate and election watchdog. Joe McLaughlin is a senior fellow at Temple University's Institute for Public Affairs and a longtime government official. Stella Tsai is an attorney and member of the recently-created Philadelphia Ethics Board. Norma Van Dyke is with the group Philadelphia United to Restore Ethics (PURE).
