學生確診維多利亞中學停課 H1N1(Swine Flu)HK
Description:
Secondary schools brace for closure ( The Standard) Half a million secondary school students and their parents could know as early as today if school's out early because of human swine flu (H1N1). The rapid spread of the disease could force the closure of more than 500 secondary schools, Centre for Health Protection controller Thomas Tsang Ho- fai warned yesterday. His assessment came after announcing that the human swine flu tally had reached 104 - the "tip of the iceberg" with more cases expected to be discovered over the next few days. The possible closure of secondary schools came after a 15-year-old girl from Tang Shiu Kin Victoria Government Secondary School in Wan Chai was confirmed to have the virus, forcing the school to close for 14 days from today. "It is important for us to find out if other students from the school have also come down with symptoms or are confirmed to have human swine flu. So we can determine if it is an individual case or an outbreak," Tsang said. "Whether to close all other schools will be determined by our investigation [last night]." The girl developed symptoms on Friday after sitting an exam with 200 other students. The school said all exams have been suspended and students told to stay at home. It is the third secondary school to close. Asked whether health authorities will expand the closure order on primary schools and kindergartens to include all 527 secondary schools in Hong Kong, Tsang said he could not rule out the possibility. Twelve new cases were confirmed yes terday including, for the first time, young children who contracted the virus locally. One is a 10-month-old girl from Yau Tong with no travel history - the youngest patient so far. Others include a six-year-old boy who attends Canaan Kindergarten in Kowloon Tong and lives in Tsuen Wan, and an eight-year-old boy who goes to PLK Fung Ching Memorial Primary School in Tseung Kwan O and lives in Residence Oasis in the same district. Tsang warned Hong Kong will continue see a "double-digit" rise in the number of cases over the next couple of weeks. "Not only has the virus taken root in Hong Kong, it exists across districts and there has been some degree of community transmission." The six-year-old boy developed symptoms on Saturday and the eight- year-old fell ill on Sunday. All primary schools, kindergartens, child-care centers and special schools were closed last Friday. Tsang said the government's decision to close all junior schools on Friday was "timely" and certainly helped to curb the spread of the disease. Since Hong Kong has moved from the containment to mitigation phase, the government will "scale down" its preventive measures in a bid to save more resources for future outbreaks. Among the new cases yesterday was a Secondary One student from St Paul's Convent School - the 20th patient related to that particular cluster. Of the 104 cases, 40 are males and 64 females with ages ranging from 10 months to 56 years. The medium age of the victims is 20. Three-quarters of the cases of infection were imported. Hong Kong is also starting to see more cases coming from neighboring countries such as Thailand, the Philippines, Korea and Australia. "Luckily enough, no one needs intensive care or has died. Most patients have only minor symptoms such as a running nose, fever and cough. Many also recover after resting for a few days. But we shouldn't let down our guard," Tsang said. Meanwhile, MTR Corp, which manages Residence Oasis, said it has stepped up disinfection following the announcement.
