Taking apart your G1 is serious business so read this entire section. If you need to disassemble your G1 you have come to the right place. G1 screen issue
This is the issue I am having with my G1. The unit had this concern with the stock t-mobile firmware as well. I rooted and installed a new rom to see if it would go away. If the phone goes to sleep, the screen comes back about 1 out of 5 times. If you continue to play with the buttons sometimes it will come back, sometimes it stays black for a while. You can hear clicks taking place behind the black screen.

DIY G1 Creak Fix
Ok guys. Mine creaked the exact same way. Here's a quick DIY fix that take no time at all, and it pretty much undetectable. What I did was take a piece of felt that has a sticky back to it, and cut a thin rectangle out, and then mounted it to the inside lip of the chin over the call and home keys and then another small one next to it.
