Il decesso del tastierista è stato comunicato dalla famiglia che ha chiesto anche che la sua privacy "sia rispettata in questo momento difficile". Wright, tra i fondatori del gruppo a metà degli anni Sessanta a Cambrige, contribuì al successo planetario della band. Richard Wright ha avuto un ruolo importante - sotto il profilo creativo ed esecutivo - in una serie di grandi album della band, come "The Dark Side of the Moon" e "Wish you were here". Ed è rimasto col gruppo nelle sue varie metamorfosi anche dopo l'uscita di Roger Waters nel 1985. Notevole poi il suo contributo alla nascita dell'ultimo grande album dei Pink Floyd: "The Division Bell". Proveniente da una famiglia londinese benestante del quartiere di Hatch End, da ragazzino entra al London College of Music. Ma dopo sole due settimane abbandona le lezioni di pianoforte. Si iscrive poi alla facoltà di architettura al politecnico di Regent Street. Qui conosce Roger Waters e Nick Mason. E ben presto abbandona gli studi per seguire la sua passione per la musica. Nel 1965 i tre, insieme a Syd Barrett, fondano i Pink Floyd. Dopo l'uscita di Syd Barrett, Wright diventa il compositore melodico del gruppo. La somiglianza della sua voce con quella del chitarrista subentrato a Barrett, David Gilmour, viene sfruttata per creare in alcune canzoni effetti particolari. Wright ha contribuito in modo decisivo a brani celebri dei Pink Floyd, come A Saucerful of Secrets, Echoes, e Shine on You Crazy Diamond. I suoi pezzi di maggior successo commerciale sono due canzoni dell'album Dark Side of the Moon (1973): The Great Gig in the Sky e Us and Them, ma anche Keep talking tratta da The Division bell (1994). Nel 1979 tuttavia i problemi con il gruppo giungono ad una rottura: Roger Waters lo espelle durante la registrazione di The Wall. A questo non erano estranei problemi personali (il divorzio) e forse un eccessivo uso di cocaina (sempre smentiti dall'interessato). Nei successivi concerti del 1980 e del 1981 che promuovono l'album continua a suonare, ma non più da socio e solo come musicista stipendiato. Wright e e il batterista Nick Mason sono i soli componenti del gruppo ad aver suonato in ogni concerto del gruppo. L'album successivo, The Final Cut (1983), è l'unico che non porterà la firma di Rick Wright, che ormai è stato definitivamente allontanato dai Pink Floyd. Poi la sua parabola con il gruppo segna un riavvicinamento:Gilmour lo richiama per collaborare durante le session conclusive di "A momentary lapse of reason" (1987). E poi viene reintegrato a pieno titolo come membro del gruppo con l'album Delicate Sound of Thunder (1988), un doppio che seleziona tra il materiale registrato durante concerti della tournee seguente all'album. Con l'album successivo, Division Bell (1994), per il quale scrive cinque canzoni e canta Wearing the Inside Out, segna la sua rinascita artistica in grande stile. Di Wright è stato detto che ha costruito il "muro sonoro" che costituiva la base per gli indimenticabili assoli di Gilmour.
