Title:
Jake Wildwood - Sweet Potato Soup (a tune on tiple)
Description:
Well, I still have a cough so those new songs will have to wait. I have here, however, for you a little bit of a rambling shamble of tunes I've been working out on this excellent new instrument of mine. This is a c.1925 tiple (tee-play) built probably by Regal and sold by Bruno (out of NY) under their "Wizard" brand name. If you don't know what a tiple is... it's the coolest instrument ever this side of a banjo-uke. It looks like a tenor uke with a longer headstock and 10 tuners, but that belies the fact that it's a 10 steel string instrument in 4 courses (2 pairs and 2 triples in 2/3/3/2) tuned GCEA (like a uke) or ADF#B (like a uke). I tuned it in GCEA for this clip and you really get a mandola or bouzouk-sized bottom end in this configuration. To me, this thing sounds like a pocket 12 string, though with a definite flavor of its own. It's got an entirely huge sound for the size of the instrument. The sustain just keeps going on and on and ringing. I walk by it and it sings in my wake. Truly bizarre. I rather like the way it fills the role of several instruments: uke/guitar chording, comfortable travel size, mandolin soloing (especially on the highest course), big 12 string-style octave sound, and of course -- curiosity!

![]() | Jake Wildwood - One Good Eye Here's another old song revived on the uke... this is also a 5-year-old nowadays. I wrote this as a sort of dirge at the time, and while a lot of it involves memories of my Grandfather, a lot of it is also about the shock of becoming an adult and wondering what there might be to live for. Here are the lyrics: I've tasted the salt as it rusts on my lips And the asphalt on my tongue I've met princes kings lords of the night All before I was young I learned to write at my grandfather's hand And ... |

It has steel strings, proper frets and quite elaborate although home-styled decorative inlay. Good action, sound and surprisingly good sustain. Measures about 24" and is in overall very good shape. |

![]() | Jake Wildwood - Careless Love (traditional) I've always loved this song, so I figured I'd share it with you. This is the same version (I think) that Pete Seeger played with Doc Watson, et al, on Rainbow Quest and is also (I think) the same version Joan Baez plays. Here I'm playing it on a c.1925? 1930? Regal Octofone (basically a double-strung tenor guitar that you can string and tune however you like) tuned to octave mandolin tuning with octaves on the G & D. Think a bigger, deeper mandolin. I think the tone of this guy really suits ... |
![]() | Jake Wildwood - Northland Snow G'darn, it was so cold (again) last night, with all the stars out, and so cold this morning, with the sun out, and the wood furnace was giving my Bonnie dear so much lip, that I simply had to write a song about it all. That's this... I'm really enjoying this banjo -- please excuse my lack of geetar and uke songs lately. So -- fair enough! I'm playing it on my c.1925 ... |
