At Home Among Srtangers... (English subtitles). (1 / 10).
At Home Among Srtangers, a Stranger Among His Own (English subtitles). Part 1 of 10. At Home Among Srtangers, a Stranger Among His Own is a 1974 film starring Anatoly Solonitsyn and directed by Nikita Mikhalkov (Russian language title is Svoy sredi chuzhikh, chuzhoy sredi svoikh / Свой среди чужих, чужой среди своих). The setting is post-Russian Civil War, during the reconstruction of the young Soviet republic. During the war, Shilov, Sarichev, Kungorov, Zabelin and Lipyagin had become great friends. There are two main plots in the film, the first involving the theft of gold by outlaws just after the Russian civil war. Though the cannons are now silent, the enemy continues to harass the Soviets. The regional committee sends a precious shipment of gold by train to Moscow, and a group of Cheka soldiers led by Shilov are entrusted with the responsibility of guarding it. The gold is needed to buy bread from overseas to feed the starving population. When the train is attacked by bandits, the guards are killed and the gold stolen. Shilov is kidnapped before the train sets off, and is dumped in the street, pumped full of drugs, after the attack. He is suspected of treason, partly because his brother was a "White", which is where the second plot comes in. Shilov must infiltrate the enemy camp to find the gold, hence the title. The second plot involves the Shilov's desire to clear his name of murder, and he must find out who killed his friend. During his efforts, Shilov uncovers a web of deceit and treachery, which allowed the robbery to succeed. The story of a hero battling against corruption and greed echoes the cattle baron or railroad Westerns. The film also has male cameraderie as a subplot, as the initial joy of demobbed Red Army soldiers returning from the Revolution is sorely tested. It has strong parallels in some ways with Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid in its look, period setting, and strong action sequences, which are still famous in Russia, involving literal cliffhangers, white water rafting, chases on horseback, holding up trains etc. ======================= Film crew: Written by E. Come And See (with English subtitles). Part 2 (1 of 8).
Come And See (with English subtitles). Part 2 (episode 1 of 8). Come and See (Russian: "Иди и смотри", Idi i smotri) is a 1985 Soviet war movie/psychological horror directed by Elem Klimov and starring Aleksei Kravchenko and Olga Mironova in the leading roles. The film is set in 1943 in various villages in Belarus during the Nazi occupation. The screenplay was written by Ales Adamovich in collaboration with Elem Klimov. The words Come and See ("Иди и смотри" in Russian) quote from The Apocalypse of John, chapter 6, ...and I heard one of the four living creatures saying, as with a voice of thunder, "Come and see!" (In Russian: "... ============================== Description: A feature by Elem Klimov made from the script by Ales Adamovich. It was released in 1985 and ranks among the most horrifying war films. It`s not only about the war of 1941-1945 exactly, but about any war, its devastating force sweeping away the natural course of things. The film is based upon documental facts and `The Khatyn Story` by Ales Adamovich. The authors describe the place and events which became a symbol of national tragedy. The hero of the film is Flyora, a sixteen-year-old boy that turned to the woods to help the partisans. At the beginning he is just a kid. Then he lives through the horror of the Nazi executions and becomes amazingly grown-up, and even old. The war had distorted the once tender childish facial features - it`s all wrinkles now. The altered face of Flyora is the face of War. The authors were so true-to-life, uncompromising and austere as to portray in the centre of the film not some grown-up man, but an unexperie nced kid with his childhood still here. ============================== Crew: Director: Elem Klimov. Elem Klimov did not make any more films after this one, leading some critics to speculate as to why. In 2001, Klimov said: "I lost interest in making films ... Everything that was possible I felt I had already done". ============================== From Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Come_and_See and Russian Cinema Counsil: http://www.ruscico.com/dvd.php?lang=en&dvd=50
