Description:
A folk song - words by Robert Burns music by Ralph Vaughn Williams Ca' The Yowes Tae The Knowes Chorus: Ca' the yowes to the knowes , Ca' them where the heather grows, Ca' them where the burnie rowes , My bonie dearie As I gaed down the water-side, There I met my shepherd lad: He row'd me sweetly in his plaid, And he ca'd me his dearie. Ca' the yowes , &c. Will ye gang down the water-side, And see the waves sae sweetly glide Beneath the hazels spreading wide, The moon it shines fu' clearly. Ca' the yowes , &c. Ye sall get gowns and ribbons meet, Cauf-leather shoon upon your feet, And in my arms ye'se lie and sleep, An' ye sall be my dearie. Ca' the yowes , &c. If ye'll but stand to what ye've said, I'se gang wi' thee, my shepherd lad, And ye may row me in your plaid, And I sall be your dearie. Ca' the yowes , &c. While waters wimple to the sea, While day blinks in the lift sae hie , Till clay-cauld death sall blin' my e'e , Ye sall be my dearie. Ca' the yowes , &c.

Joanna Newsom - Ca' the yowes
Joanna Newsom playing a traditional Scottish folk song in Norman, Oklahoma on December 11, 2006 LYRICS Ca' the yowes to the knowes, Ca' them whare the heather grows, Ca' them whare the burnie rowes, My bonnie dearie! As I gaed down the water side, There I met my shepherd lad, He row'd me sweetly in his plaid And he ca'd me his dearie. Will ye gang down the water side, And see the waves sae sweetly glide, Beneath the hazels spreading wide? The moon it shines fu' clearly. I was bred up at nae sic school , My shepherd lad, to play the fool, And a' the day to sit in dool, And naebody to see me. Ye sall get gowns and ribbons meet, Cauf-leather shoon upon your feet, And in my arms ye'se lie and sleep, And ye shall be my dearie. If ye'll but stand to what ye've said, I'd gang wi' you my shepherd lad, And ye may rowe me in your plaid, And I shall be your dearie. While waters wimple to the sea, While day blinks in the lift sae hie, Till clay-cauld death sall blin' my e'e, Ye shall be my dearie.

Robert Burns: A Lass wi a tocher
The tune to this is "Ballinamona Ora" - an Irish Jig. Burns wrote this for Thomson who was planning a book of Irish Airs. It was written in the last few months of the poet's life but he has lost none of his skill. The story is that he would rather have a lass wi a tocher (a dowry) than one with beauty as the latter will fade but the "nice yellow guineas" will last. Chorus Then hey for a lass wi' a tocher, Then hey for a lass wi' a tocher, Then hey for a lass wi' a tocher, The nice yellow guineas for me! 1. Awa wi' your witchcraft o' Beauty's alarms, The slender bit beauty you grasp in your arms! O, gie me the lass that has acres o' charms! O, gie me the lass wi' the weel-stockit farms! 2. Your Beauty's a flower in the morning that blows, And withers the faster the faster it grows; But the rapturous charm o' the bonie green knowes, Ilk spring they're new deckit wi' bonie white yowes! 3. And e'en when this Beauty your bosom has blest, The brightest o' Beauty may cloy when possess'd; But the sweet, yellow darlings wi' Geordie impress'd, The langer ye hae them, the mair they're carest! In the last verse Geordie is of course the king, whose head appeared on the coins. I can't find the music anywhere so for those interested I have uploaded it here http://www.thesession.org/tunes/display/8263/details
