Pardon the rough video. Wanted to show off my homemade gourd banjo. I used the neck from my Prust tackhead. The tune is from RD Lunceford's album "Cotton Blossom" - It is an old slave song. Lunceford writes "this song was used to alert escaped slaves to the presence of 'paterollers' or slave-hunters in the area." I think it fits nicely on the gourd.
Brigg's Corn Shucking Jig
A classic and often played song from the Briggs' 1855 Banjo Instructor. This has 3 sections, as opposed to the usual 2. The source is yet unknown, but the flashy strokes in the second section makes this a popular selection amongst Minstrel Banjo players. Played on a Jay Moschella Tackhead Banjo.
Roustabout (Gourd Banjo)
This version is inspired by Fred Cocharam. The banjo is made by Bob Thournburg.

Based loosely on the playing of Dwight Diller. This is a homemade gourd banjo built during the spring and summer of '07.
Gourd Joe Clark
Well here's my first go at a tune on my beautiful Gourd Banjo. An extremely talented young instrument builder named Brian Carver built it for me. If you want one of your own, he can be reached at ==brian1988@sbcglobal.net==. He builds Banjos, mandolins, fiddles, you name it. As you watch this please bear in mind that I'm a beginner playing a decidedly advanced instrument. This banjo is fretless and lacks the advantage of modern hardware for projection, giving me a double whammy of more ...
Lightfoot Hornpipe
From the Converse 1872 Analytical Banjo Method. Hard as heck to play because of the lack of open strings and difficult position shifts. It lays out real well when you read Frank Converse's original fingerings. Thank God that man was not a casualty of the Civil War.

A tackhead banjo with a 10" pot and 21" scale. Using an internal tensioning system similar to those found in an Irish Bodhran. For more information on this banjo or other hand crafted folk instruments, go to deepcreekstrings.blogspot.com

Based on the Briggs' version, and played on a Moshella Gourd Banjo.
Harper's Jig
From Buckley 1860 on a Jay Moschella gourd banjo. Crazy rhythm figure in this one that everybody seems to do differently. This is how I did it today.
