The Sleeping Princess

Title:
The Sleeping Princess

Description:
I am indebted to the Archivist of the Ballet Ramert for her identification of this production of The Sleeping Princess, with sets designed by Nadia Benois. Featured here is three glimpses of the Prologue with June Brae as the Lilac Fairy and her 4 fairy attendants, a glimpse of Carabosse's mime with King Florestan 14th and his Queen. It then moves to Act 1 with Margot Fonteyn as Aurora and the four princes -- suitors for her hand. Transmission: 25th & 29th Mar 1939 This film footage is from the John Bliss Archive Collection held and administered by the Alexandra Palace Television Society. http://www.apts.org.uk ~ APTS ~ Preserving the televisual past for the digital future

Only Record of Anna Pavlova's Voice
Anna Pavlova is calling and then feeding her swans at Ivy House when we hear her voice. She talks to them - 'Hurry up. Come on ... come on darlings.' Feeling a bit (actually, quite!) smug having edited my first video - a very small step for a man! No oscars for this one though!

Colour television experiments were conducted after the end of the usual television broadcasting hours, so usually television experiments were conducted in the early hours of the morning. The BBC were at this point experimenting with the American ...

Tamara Karsavina a la Maison 1921
Yesterday I came across this footage of Mariinsky Theatre and Ballet Russe Prima Ballerina Absoluta Tamara Karsavina (1885-1978). It was taken at her home in 1921 and shows her arranging the interior of a doll's house, selecting materials to be made into clothing, reading a letter indoors, exercising and dancing in the garden and, finally, leaving to perform at the Coliseum Theatre in London. I've introduced the video with some photographs of this great artist - including one of her teaching ...
