San Francisco - Downtown & Union Square

Title:
San Francisco - Downtown & Union Square

Description:
After a late night of exotic entertainment at Asia SF, our day (February 24, 2008) got started very early, and although it was raining I decided to capture a few photos Union Square and the area surrounding our hotel. I walked just a few steps east to Union Square, the heart of San Francisco's shopping, hotel and theatre district. Big shopping venues such as Macy's, Saks Fifth Avenue, Bloomingdale's, Nordstrom and Neiman Marcus surround this historic square. Luxury stores such as Louis Vuitton, Gucci, Dior, Chanel, Prada, Armani and Hermes are also represented. Just west from The Handlery are two historic theatres: the Geary and Curran Theatres. The Moscone Convention Centre and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art are close by as well. Before our excursion to Muir Woods I got a quick hour long walk in to check out some of the streets surrounding Union Square and had a delicious waffle breakfast in a little 24 hour eatery called Pinecrest Diner. Punctually at 8:30 am we got picked up by a diesel-powered van from Incredible Adventures, chauffered by our charming driver and local expert Michelle. She had three other guests in the van: a grandmother, mother and granddaughter team from Texas who were here for a quick girls' weekend getaway. Off we drove, and Michelle started to explain the various parts of San Francisco and Marin County that we started driving through. We made it up into the Muir Woods National Monument where we admired one of the few remaining old-growth coastal redwood forests. Before logging started in California there were an estimated 2 million acres (or 8000 square kilometers) of redwood forests. By the early part of the last century, most of these trees had vanished, cut down for construction and industrial purposes. In the early 1900s, a local Congressman by the name of William Kent was acutely aware of the need to preserve some of the last remainders of these forests, and he purchased 611 acres (2.47 square kilometers) of land from the Tamalpais Land and Water Company to protect these unique redwood trees. In 1908 President Theodore Roosevelt declared the land a national monument, the first such area to be created from land that was donated by a private individual. Today Muir Woods features Giant Sequoia trees that grow up to 380 feet or 115 metres. On average the trees are between 500 and 800 years old, and the oldest is about 1,100 years old. Other species in the forest include California Bay Laurel, Bigleaf Maple Trees and Tanoak. More than 50 species of birds make Muir Woods their home. After this first introduction to Marin County, we continued to drive north to the Sonoma Valley to start our wine-tasting tour.

On our second full day in San Francisco (February 23, 2008) we were not so lucky: the weather was grey and cool and a major rain and windstorm was supposed to arrive in the area. After a nice breakfast at the Queen Anne Hotel we joined the Victorian Homes Walking Tour, led by local expert Jay Gifford. Jay Gifford, a transplant from Ann Arbor, Michigan, has been a long-time resident of San Francisco since 1979. After his job at IBM was downsized, he decided to become a walking tour guide ...
Day Break in Downtown San Francisco
Another time lapse experiment for a future project. I still haven't played around too much with the settings on my new camera, but the opportunity came to shoot from a rather exclusive location, so I propped up the camera and let it run. This is the view from the 40th floor of a building, looking north-north-west. On the left you can see Union Square. To the right is the Financial District. I love the creep of the shadows. Shot with the Samsung SC-MX20 with 3 second intervals....
San Francisco - Arrival, first look at downtown
Day 1 of our San Francisco trip, February 21, 2008, started with a 4:50 am wake-up call. Following a quick overnight stay close to the Buffalo Airport we got going early to reach the destination of our 5-day winter getaway: San Francisco. After a quick stopover at Cincinnati Airport, where we had to run to the gate to catch our connection flight, we arrived in San Francisco at about 11 am. Unfortunately the weather was not very welcoming: it was drizzly, grey and cold. But nonetheless, we ...
