March 5th UNC Chapel Hill Research Update in Charlotte

Description:
Functional Brain Imaging of Medication Treatment for High Functioning Autism: an update regarding studies being conducted in the UNC-CH Department of Psychiatry This 30-minute session will offer an update about current brain imaging studies being conducted by Gabriel Dichter, PhD in the UNC-CH Department of Psychiatry. Our research has suggested that repetitive behaviors and restricted interests in autism are related to certain patterns of brain functioning. We are currently conducting a study of the effects of a commonly prescribed medication for autism (citalopram) on brain functioning in high-functioning individuals. Participation involves up to six visits to UNC-Chapel Hill, and participants receive free medication appointments, travel reimbursements, and up to $240 for all study appointments. Presenter: Jennifer Felder, BS; Study Coordinator, Duke-UNC Brain Imaging and Analysis Center & UNC-CH Department of Psychiatry Social Cognition and Interaction Training for Adolescents and Adults with High Functioning Autism (SCIT-A) This 30-minute session will give a brief overview of a new social skills intervention for adolescents with HFA being developed at UNC-Chapel Hill. We will present an overview of the intervention, present preliminary findings, and discuss plans for further refinement of the treatment protocol. Presenters: Lauren Turner-Brown, PhD and Betty Rupp, BS, UNC-CH Neurodevelopmental Disorders Research Center Focus Group for "Social Cognition and Interaction Training for Adolescents and Adults with High Functioning Autism" development This 60-minute open-ended discussion is an opportunity for Autism Speaks members and their family and friends to offer suggestions about what they would like to see in a social skills intervention program. 3 1/2 year old "autistic" boy, compare to video at 2 years old and be amazed!
This is "Bubba". He's 3 1/2 in this video. Hopefully you've seen his video at 2. Occupational and speech therapy for a year, along with developmental preschool have brought us to this point. At 2 (first video) he was diagnosed as "having severe speech and language development disorders, probably to include apraxia. Is probably autistic." His diagnosis at 3 was "high functioning autistic". Can't wait to see what age 4 brings diagnosis-wise!
