these traveled in pairs, one on my side of the street and one across. they make a pretty cool sound, not so painful as the whooping crane! i ran into these guys pretty often, they were not particularly disturbed by my presence.

Greater Sandhill Cranes
For millions of years the Greater Sandhill Crane (Grus canadensis) has migrated through the San Luis Valley. Over 20000 cranes visit the valley in the spring and fall. Cranes travel an average of 150 miles a day. Normally they fly below 5000 feet, but have been observed as high as 11000 feet. Cranes are omnivores, thriving on grain, but will also consume berries, insects, small mammals, crustaceans, amphibians and small birds.
