 | Rubber Band and Protein Just about everyone has used rubber bands, but few people have taken the time to observe the less obvious properties of these everyday objects, the thermal properties of rubber, that is, the behavior of rubber as it relates to heat, a form of energy. Rubber, like protein and DNA, contains very large, threadlike molecules. They must be aligned when the rubber band is stretched, and become more randomly oriented when it contracts. By means of night vision equipment, the relationship between the dynamic elastic polymer structure of rubber band and the infrared photon energy can be observed. When the rubber band is stretched by external force, the infrared radiation of the stretched portion of band is enhanced, indicating the increases of temperature and free energy of rubber organic molecules.
