Shorty at the CMStPandP Depot

Title:
Shorty at the CMStPandP Depot

Description:
Smoke from the rapid acceleration still hangs in the distance, an E9 shell hangs out front and on the side of the building it still says: Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul and Pacific The name evokes visions of the past. In more than one way, as I walked along the tracks in front of the Madison depot many times during my college days. Back then there was an operator inside 24/7. And a roundhouse with 2-3 Fairbanks-Morse H10-44 switchers such as MILWAUKEE 753. It was a regular here. Replaced by MP15ACs in the early 80's. Amazingly, today one of those types scoots by the venerable depot with a short consist of empty coal hoppers.....but for a different owner.

2 WSOR Shorties But Goodies in Madison, December 1-2, 2008
SD40-2 WSOR 4051 and GP38 3806 run light to Cottage Grove on Dec. 1, seen near the Cottage Grove Road crossing. On the other side of town the next day, 3806 runs light long-hood forward across Whitney Way on the Prairie du Chien Subdivision. It picks up a single empty boxcar from Middleton and heads back to Madison. The University Bay Drive crossing has had gates and LED lights installed, but retains the same cantilever frames and mechanical bell. Video by my dad.
Last Run of Transfer 1
Here we see Transfer 1s last movement before the job is abolished. First it is seen at Cardigan West near Victoria St, and then at Lexington Ave as it prepares to head back light to Saint Paul for the last time. Transfer 1 was one of the oldest jobs in the Twin Cities area, and had the same name since the 1960s. Copyright 2009 Hildebrandt Railroad Productions, all rights reserved.
Rare breed: EMD MP15ACs at work
One of these utilitarian looking machines may well have displaced the Raymond Loewy styled Fairbanks-Morse H10-44s like MILW 753 that I saw daily while going to school in Madison, Wisconsin. Surprisingly enough several of these oddball early AC drive locos are still at work more than 25 years later. Here the 1502 and 1503 as well as SD40-2 4002 have 73 cars on a Saturday MAJ from Madison to Janesville in tow. Seems that spare parts are not a problem.... And yes, there's much rumble in here ...
Milwaukee road runby- 7-15-07- IRM Union Illinois
This is the same train we saw in that other video. Only 2 differences; One, is that its moving, and two, the cabooses were cut off. Listen to the 567 engine! Enjoy.

Fall colors inspection train
Perhaps for the last time this year the WSOR inspection train was out. Perhaps for the last time creeping along at 10 mph or so since construction materials abound along the railroad. Perhaps next time that magnificent E-unit trio can be opened up a bit more. Must be something like 7200 horsepower chafing at the bit. No kw designation from me, no way. These units have character. And thereby horsepower. Besides, when they were built no-one thought about using kilowatts for cars and engines ...
