L'action commence par un duel d'archers, où les archers normands l'emportent en nombre mais ont le désavantage de tirer depuis une position basse. Ensuite des soldats à pied partent à l'assaut. Cet assaut ne donnant rien, Guillaume envoie une première fois sa cavalerie. Les Saxons, équipés avec la hache danoise et le bouclier long tiennent bon et les Normands doivent se replier. Guillaume se précipite sur le champ de bataille pour empêcher la débandade. À ce moment son cheval s'effondre et la rumeur se propage : « Le duc est mort ! » Guillaume enlève son casque pour se faire reconnaître. À l'aile gauche, submergée par une contre-attaque saxonne, l'armée bretonne s'enfuit. Plusieurs centaines de saxons ont quitté leurs rangs pour aller massacrer les bretons pris au piège des marécages lorsque la cavalerie de Guillaume vient à leurs secours. À la fin de ce premier assaut, les pertes sont grandes de part et d'autre, Harold a perdu ses deux frères Gyrth et Lewine. Pendant une courte pause les armées se remettent en place. Le combat reprend avec sur la droite un nouvel assaut contre la muraille saxonne. Ensuite, les Normands font semblant de reculer pour forcer les Saxons à ne plus rester rangés. Ceux qui quittent leurs rangs sont massacrés quelques instants plus tard par la cavalerie normande. Cette manœuvre sera répétée à son tour avec succès par le centre normand. Cependant les victimes saxonnes se comptent surtout chez les paysans recrutés (la millice), les troupes d'élites ne faiblissent pas. Guillaume fait à nouveau jouer ses archers qu'il organise en deux corps. L'un reste au bas de la pente alors que le second s'approche au plus près des Saxons. Les premiers tirent d'abord, obligeant les Saxons à lever leurs boucliers pour se protéger, permettant au second corps d'archers d'effectuer un tir tendu. La manœuvre est répétée sur plusieurs « rafales ». Harold est alors touché à l'œil. The Battle of Hastings is one of the best known and least known historical event in the English-speaking world which along with the year 1066 is beaten mercilessly into the head of every school child through-out the English-speaking world and then some. The song is from the Secret Commonewealth, a Celtic Folk Rock Band from my college town in Murfreesboro. It's a period piece not necessarily on the battle but around the time period.
