Abkhazia starts war with Georgia
The situation is escalating in Georgia's second breakaway republic - Abkhazia. Its troops are on the move towards the security zone in the Gali region close to the border with Georgia. Meanwhile they are continuing a military operation to dislodge Georgian forces in the upper Kodori Gorge in northern Abkhazia.

Fierce clashes were seen between Georgian and Russian forces in South Ossetia, a pro-Russian autonomous region of Georgia. "I saw bodies lying on the streets, around ruined buildings, in cars," Lyudmila Ostayeva, a resident of the South Ossetia capital, Tskhinvali, told The Associated Press. "It's impossible to count them now. There is hardly a single building left undamaged," she said after fleeing to a village near the Russian border, AP reported. One U.S. State Department official called the conflict a "very dangerous situation" and said diplomatic moves are afoot around the globe to stop it. Georgia announces ceasefire
Tbilisi has reportedly declared a unilateral ceasefire in the conflict with its breakaway republic of South Ossetia. Georgia's minister for reintegration said Tbilisi wanted to avoid mass casualties. It follows days of shelling and skirmishes between the sides.
