This week in Visions we look at new ideas for Fitzroy's Atherton Gardens site, developed by students and staff in a Masters of Architecture design studio. We also examine the role of the University in tackling the problem of trachoma among Indigenous Australians. Program Has Trachoma In Its Sights: Leading University of Melbourne health experts and philanthropists have joined forces to eradicate a curable eye disease which continues to cause blindness in Australia's Indigenous communities. Re-Imagining Fitzroy (2.30 in): The impetus for the 'Re-Imaging Fitzroy Design Studio' was that to make cities more sustainable, development must be intensified around public transport. Fitzroy is an inner-Melbourne suburb that has excellent access to public transport and the central city. The Atherton Gardens precinct is a major opportunity to explore what intensification in the inner city might look like.
