Visions 31: Trachoma Battle & Re-Imagining Fitzroy

Title:
Visions 31: Trachoma Battle & Re-Imagining Fitzroy

Description:
This week in Visions we look at new ideas for Fitzroy's Atherton Gardens site, developed by students and staff in a Masters of Architecture design studio. We also examine the role of the University in tackling the problem of trachoma among Indigenous Australians. Program Has Trachoma In Its Sights: Leading University of Melbourne health experts and philanthropists have joined forces to eradicate a curable eye disease which continues to cause blindness in Australia's Indigenous communities. For more information go to http://www.mdhs.unimelb.edu.au/node/354. Re-Imagining Fitzroy (2.30 in): The impetus for the 'Re-Imaging Fitzroy Design Studio' was that to make cities more sustainable, development must be intensified around public transport. Fitzroy is an inner-Melbourne suburb that has excellent access to public transport and the central city. The Atherton Gardens precinct is a major opportunity to explore what intensification in the inner city might look like. To view all of the designs and leave your feedback on the project, go to http://www.abp.unimelb.edu.au/re-imagining-fitzroy/. Trachoma
Maggie examines a patient with bilateral trachoma. Just as a note, Maggie knew she was coming down with malaria that day (every rainy season she gets it) and she is still here doing her AMAZING job, despite for sure feeling tired. There was no doctor at the eye clinic for 3 years before Dr. Wanye came (at a Tamale hospital, the only referal hosopital in the Northern region, that serves a population of over 2 million) so the opthalmic nurses did all of the diagnosing, prescribing, and surgeries needed. They are so well trained and AMAZING

How we make models Part 1
We are the second year students doing Architecture studies at M******** University. This task we are doing now is to present graphic analyses of the interstitial spaces between buildings. At the moment we are making the "mold" which contains 3 facades of the surrounding buildings. Then we'll pour/fill it with flour which is mixed with water to achieve the model we want. Recorded on Friday 10:54 pm. (What a time for going clubbing...)
