 | Commandos rescue eight LTTE child soldiers - Sri Lanka Police Commandos the elite corps of the Police Special Task Force (STF) on Tuesday (August 28) rescued seven child combatants along with another 20-year old youth who had been forced by the LTTE to engage in a terrorist attack against the security forces in the Kangikaidichchi Aru area. According to STF sources, the commandos had rescued the group of young LTTE cadres comprising four girls and four boys when they had successfully intercepted a terrorist movement at a location close to the 212 milepost on the Akkaraipattu- Pothuvil main road. The group of terrorists had attacked the STF commandos who had been conducting a clearing operation in the area around 5 am on Tuesday. The STF personnel had overpowered the terrorist attack successfully forcing them to flee in all directions. During the subsequent search, STF personnel found eight fear-stricken children who had been hiding in the jungle along with weapons and other military gear belonging to the LTTE. On inquires, the children have revealed they had come to attack the STF with a group consisting of about 50 other LTTE terrorists. The children have further said the terrorists group had attacked the STF with rocket-propelled grenades and T-56 weapons during the firefight on Tuesday early morning. STF officials told defence.lk that there are seven LTTE child soldiers, boys and girls between the ages 14 and 16 years and one cadre aged 20 years. It has been further revealed that all the rescued LTTE cadres had been forcibly recruited to the terrorist outfit at a very young age. They told the STF that they had been abducted from their parents by the LTTE at different times, forcibly given arms training and put into combat. |

 | The Humanitarian Mission of the Sri Lanka Armed Forces The Mavil Aru dam is safe. Water is flowing. And the Tamil Tigers(LTTE) has withdrawn after the Security Forces advanced to take over the territory which controls the flow of water to the farmers downstream of Mavil Aru. This is the latest after the Sri Lankan Air Forces bombed the LTTE positions held by the Tiger cadres in Mavil Aru territory. Kheliya Rambukwella, Government defence spokesperson, confirmed that the government is now in control of the sluice gates. The government's objective was to be in command of the sluice gates without letting the LTTE control the flow of water. The government threw in all it forces from air, land and sea to push the LTTE out of the Mavil Aru area. There were casualties on both sides. LTTE took the brunt of the attack, losing over 45 cadres. Many more were injured. The record, as it stands now, shows that the LTTE has lost unexpected number of its cadres, lost control of Mavil Aru dam and sluice gates and lost territory. The Security Forces are satisfied that despite the loss of cadres it has won a politically significant battle more than a military victory. This victory is also a defeat for Erik Solheim who was hoping to save his LTTE allies by urging both parties to withdraw to their original positions which meant conceding territory to the LTTE. The Government's refusal has paid dividends. |

 | SLMM blames Sri Lanka military for aid workers' massacre International ceasefire monitors Wednesday 30.08.2006 blamed the Sri Lankan military for the massacre of 17 local aid workers from international group Action Contre La Faim earlier this month, Reuters reported, quoting Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission (SLMM). Outgoing SLMM head Ulf Henricsson, called the killings a "committed act of assassination" and "one of the most serious recent crimes against humanitarian aid workers worldwide," AP reported. "SLMM is, with the obtained findings, convinced that there cannot be any other armed groups than the Security Forces who could actually have been behind [this] act," the SLMM said. The finding is based on its investigation and interviews with other parties and the international community, the SLMM said. Outgoing SLMM head Ulf Henricsson, called the killings a "committed act of assassination" and "one of the most serious recent crimes against humanitarian aid workers worldwide." The SLMM also ruled that a June claymore mine attack on a civilian bus that killed almost 70 was a breach of the ceasefire by Tamil Tigers, while blaming the government for a string of similar attacks in LTTE-held areas from April onwards. 15 of the ACF staff had been found dead on the floor of their ruined office, while two had been gunned down while apparently trying to escape in a car. In the office, the bodies, clad in ACF T-shirts, had bullet wounds and most of them lay face down. All except one, a Muslim, were Tamils. The SLMM ruled the execution-style killings of the aid workers in Muttur a breach of the Ceasefire Agreement. Earlier, the SLMM charged that the Sri Lankan authorities are deliberately hampering efforts to investigate the murder of 17 aid workers, some of whose relatives also blamed the military for the killings. "I have experienced this in the Balkans before. When you're not let in, it's a sign that there's something they want to hide," Henricsson told Reuters two weeks ago. "You have a lot of time to clear it up. If there was clear evidence for the LTTE to have done it, why not let us in to see it?" Henricsson said amid accusations by the Sri Lankan government the Tamil Tigers carried out the massacre. "They (government forces) are denying us access to the whole area, so we cannot monitor. There were journalist trips arranged to Mutur. That was possible, but we had no access. Why? For security reasons? Of course not. There are other reasons." The SLMM report Wednesday backed up accusations by parents of some of the murdered aid workers who blamed Sri Lankan troops who recaptured Muttur town from the LTTE in early August for the killings. |

 | Video documentary on the claymore attack by Lankan Army A seven minute video documentary on the claymore attack on 29 January on a school bus near Madhu church in the Mannar district has been released by the LTTE Peace Secretariat. The final toll of those killed in the attack stands at 20. A twelve year old injured boy taken to the Vavuniya hospital died a week later.
