Mississippi Ghost Towns: Rodney

Title:
Mississippi Ghost Towns: Rodney

Description:
This is a trip we took to Rodney, Mississippi. You would never guess it now, but Rodney was once a bustling and thriving river port town. It missed becoming the state capital by only three votes. However, today it is pretty much in ruins. There are still a few people who live there but most of the town itself is abandoned. There are empty buildings, houses and churches lining the main street in Rodney. One of the churches still bears the scars of a Civil War gunboat attack and even has a cannonball stuck in the wall. Rodney is an absolutely amazing place to visit filled with history and reminders of those that lived before us.

Exploring long abandoned homesites
this slide show records my exploring two abandoned home sites. These homes existed back in the 1940s and were destroyed from a typhoon. The only way to get here is by boat or kayak then a short trek across some muddy marshland. This land is cut off from the mainland by marsh and natural waterways. The Nature Conservancy purchased all the land around this area, preventing new development here. You can see why they did that, it is beautiful here. No need for houses out here. Windsor Ruins
Windsor Ruins used to be an antebellum home. It was deemed too beautiful to destroy by the Union forces. In the 1890s, however, a partygoer's cigarette ignited something and the whole place burned down. In today's dollars, it was a 3 million dollar home.
