Uttarkashi

Title:
Uttarkashi

Description:
Uttarkashi is a stop off town on the way from Rishikesh to Gangotri. I was not overly impressed with it initially, having ended up in a hotel by the bus stand, but discovered it was a hidden gem, especially down by the banks of the Ganga. The Ganga Aarti ceremony there was particularly moving, and I am really pleased with my footage of it (well, aside from the camera wobble)

Trek 1 - Uttarkashi to Kerdarnath via Panwali
Part 1: I did hope to do this in 8 days; the 17km from Uttarkashi to Laluna by taxi, then the next 150km up to Kedarnath walking. No guide, no porter, no tent, no hindi, but a bad map, a compass, an altimeter, a sleeping bag in a 15kg backpack and my Swamiji!!! Many broken bridges, lots of leeches, lots of swimming in the rivers (in my shoes too), lots of rain and lots of thank you's... Warning: the Uttaranchal map (approved by Survey of India) has many mistakes; missing roads, villages that ...
Gangotri
At 3000 metres (nearly 10000 feet) altitude, the air in Gangotri is thin and fine. Day time it was warm, but at night it was a case of huddling under duvets. The terrain reminded me of Scotland (though multiplied by several units), but the territory was as Indian as you could get. Gangotri, being the nearest you can get by road to the mouth of the holy Ganga river, is a major pilgrimage centre for Hindus (the more hardy of whom make the 38km round trek, up a further thousand metres, to the ...

Arambol Carnival Begins despite police ban
Apparently at the 2008 Arambol Carnival a couple of girls got nekkid (so the story goes) and folk got a bit upset, so the police decided to ban the 2009 Carnival. Well, as you can see, it went ahead anyway.

Love Boat Big Band Teaser
The Love Boat Big Band played at The Queen's Hall in Edinburgh as a sort of "grand finale" to The Edinburgh International Festival. It certainly was grand, that's for sure. The plan was to film it from a number of different angles and to try and get a decent sound recording, but you know how to make God laugh? Yep, make plans. Yours truly got hammered drunk after the filming and forgot to bring back his video camera power cable (which is now missing and may soon be presumed dead) so could ...
