China WATCH VIDEO Source: CCTV.com | 06-17-2008 09:14 In southern China a new round of rain storms have been battering the area since Sunday. The bad weather is worsening floods caused by continuous rainfall over the past 20 days. At least 200 people have died or are missing and 38 million people have been affected by the rainstorms. Over 120,000 houses have collapsed. Continuous heavy rains have swelled many rivers, including the Yangtze, Zhujiang, Xijiang and Minjiang, above danger levels. Now the highest flood crest in 20 years is moving downstream along the Xijiang River in Guangdong province. The state flood prevention center is warning local governments to prepare for floods. Zhang Xu, State Flood & Drought Command Center said "The weather is abnormal now and extreme weather conditions are occurring very frequently. The flood season will be relatively long and our next task is to prepare for it well." Meteorologists say southern China will experience at least two major rainstorms in the next five days. The region is on the alert for landslides and mudflows in mountain areas. Cities are preparing for possible floods and reservoirs are being monitored. |
![]() | Fear of Flooding Continues in China SelectPlusFear of Flooding Continues in ChinaFear of Flooding Continues in ChinaThe Associated PressChinese officials say the need to drain an earthquake formed lake is becoming extemely important. If the dam were to break, a million homes could be at risk for flooding. (June 9)[Notes:ANCHOR VOICE] Crisis level ... That is what Chinese officials are saying an earthquake-made lake is becoming. A channel is funneling water downstream, but the water has no where to go. And water levels in the newly formed lake are rising past dangerous levels. This lake was created following a landslide after last month's earthquake. And as more rain falls, and more aftershocks can be felt -- the pressure on the dam grows. On Monday, the Chinese government sent 120 more soldiers to help a crew blasting away the debris. They are using explosives and anti-tank weapons to break up anything that could be blocking the channel. Officials say its important to have the water recede slowly, because if the dam were to burst: more than a million homes would be at risk for flooding. The Chinese government says the chances of that happening remain low. ___ ___, The Associated Press.(****END****) ANCHOR VOICE:-------------------------VIDEO PRODUCER: Kevin White------------------------------VIDEO SOURCE: APTN--------------------------VIDEO APPROVAL:------------------------------VIDEO RESTRICTIONS: No Access China----------------------------------SCRIPT/WIRE SOURCE:------------------------------------ |
