 | Berlin: Busfahrt 249 Kurfürstendamm zum Bahnhof Zoo Der Kurfürstendamm (umgangssprachlich auch Ku'damm) ist eine 3½ Kilometer lange Hauptverkehrsstraße im Berliner Bezirk Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf, der vom Breitscheidplatz mit der Kaiser-Wilhelm-Gedächtniskirche in Charlottenburg bis zum Rathenauplatz in Wilmersdorf führt. Die kleinste Hausnummer ist die 11 und die Nummern 77 bis 89 hat es nie gegeben -- am Lehniner Platz geht es direkt nach der 76 mit der Nummer 90 weiter. Die Anfangsnummern 1 bis 10 hatte es nach Beginn der Bebauung 1850 noch bis zum Tode von Reichspräsident Friedrich Ebert am 28. Februar 1925 gegeben. Ihm zu Ehren wurde die damalige Budapester Straße zwischen Potsdamer Platz und Brandenburger Tor umbenannt in Friedrich-Ebert-Straße (heute kurz: Ebertstraße). Um das Land Ungarn nicht zu brüskieren, wurde zum Ausgleich der Kurfürstendamm um den Abschnitt östlich des jetzigen Breitscheidplatzes (seinerzeit Auguste-Viktoria-Platz) verkürzt. Der alte nordöstliche Teil bis zur Corneliusbrücke wurde dafür in Budapester Straße umbenannt. Am Joachimstaler Platz, der Kreuzung von Kurfürstendamm und Joachimstaler Straße, befindet sich auf einem viereinhalb Meter hohen Pfeiler eine gläserne Kanzel, die trotz ihrer sehr exponierten Lage selbst von vielen Berlinern nicht wahrgenommen wird. Es handelt sich um die Verkehrskanzel, von der aus Polizisten die Verkehrsampeln des Platzes von Hand schalteten. Schon seit 1962 ist sie nicht mehr in Betrieb, steht jedoch mittlerweile unter Denkmalschutz. Die Verkehrskanzel stellt ein kurioses und einzigartiges Relikt der Verkehrsplanung aus den 1950er Jahren dar. Der Bahnhof Berlin Zoologischer Garten (kurz: Bahnhof Zoo) ist ein wichtiger Bahnhof an der Berliner Stadtbahn. Er befindet sich am Hardenbergplatz im Ortsteil Berlin-Charlottenburg in unmittelbarer Nähe zum Berliner Zoo. Unter ihm befindet sich der U-Bahnhof Zoologischer Garten. Während der Zeit der Teilung Berlins war der Bahnhof der wichtigste Verkehrsknotenpunkt im Westteil der Stadt. Mit der Umsetzung des Pilzkonzeptes zum Fahrplanwechsel am 28. Mai 2006 wurden die Zugläufe im Eisenbahnknoten Berlin neu geordnet und die neuen Fernbahnhöfe Hauptbahnhof, Südkreuz und Gesundbrunnen eröffnet. Der Bahnhof Berlin-Spandau wurde mit zusätzlichen Zughalten aufgewertet. In Folge dessen halten am Bahnhof Zoologischer Garten keine ICE- und IC-Züge mehr. Vertreter einer Bürgerinitiative legten in der Nacht des Fahrplanwechsels einen Gedenkkranz für den letzten planmäßig haltenden ICE nieder. Bis dahin hatte sie rund 130.000 Unterschriften für einen Erhalt des Bahnhofs Zoo als Fernbahnhof gesammelt. |

 | Berlin - Checkpoint Charlie 'Checkpoint Charlie' was the colloquial name for a crossing point between the former East and West Berlin (Russian and American sectors of the divided city). Although it first came into being in 1945, after the 1961 erection of the wall it became one of the few crossing points between the two sections of the divided city. It was restricted to military offices and non Germans only. Germans had to use some of the other crossing points. Its official title was Grenzübergang Friedrichstrasse. It was located at the southern part of Friedrichstrasse - near to Kochstrasse U-Bahn station in West Berlin, with Stadtmitte being the nearest open U-Bahn station in East Berlin. Nowadays very little remains of this crossing point - the wall, watch towers, wooden shed used by the US military... these were all removed after German reunification in October 1990. For tourists there is now a replica of the original US military checkpoint shed and large photographs of US and Soviet Russian solders stand guard admitting people to their own sectors. The former wall is now delineated on the ground by a double row of cobblestones. (As seen at the end of this film). This film shows video footage taken in April 1990 plus still image photographs taken in December 1989 and July 2005. There is footage on both sides of the wall, although for reasons of personal security the footage of the Eastern side of the crossing point is somewhat minimal. Nevertheless it is possible to see the arrangement of frosted glass screens which made it virtually impossible to see the crossing point from the East.
