Jack Byfield: Aeolian Minuet; Plaisir d'Amour (Martini)
Description:
The British pianist and arranger Jack Byfield (1902-77) is remembered today mainly for his long-time association with the violinists Max Jaffa and Albert Sandler and their 'Palm Court' orchestras and trios. He appeared regularly on the long-running BBC radio programme 'Grand Hotel', which ended in 1973, and also had his own orchestra. The first piece is Byfields piano transcription of a movement from an orchestral suite he wrote while a student at thr Royal College of Music in 1922. The second is transcription of the famous song by Padre Martini (1706-84). Both pieces come from a collection: 'Jack Byfield's Memories', published in 1951, when he was a household name in Britain. The other pieces in the collection are short rather basic arrangements of well known pieces that are, I think, better suited to the ballet school than the concert hall. --------------------------------------- Played by Phillip Sear http://www.psear.co.uk
