Title:
Using Technology to Bring a State School Ready Early Childhood Program to Scale
Description:
CITRIS Distinguished Speaker Susan Landry Susan Landry, the Director and Founder of the Children's Learning Institute Using Technology to Bring a State School Ready Early Childhood Program to Scale Abstract: Dr. Susan Landry will speak about her work on using technology to prepare young children from economically disadvantaged backgrounds to start school in kindergarten in the state of Texas. She and her researchers examined the gains in teacher instructional practices and growth in childrens language, emergent literacy and math skills before and after the use of the technology-driven program. Her findings show that combining a facilitated Internet based-professional development program with a PDA progress-monitoring system that informs instruction was the most effective approach. In-classroom support from a mentor/coach provided added benefit particularly for less educated teachers and for promoting gains in childrens language skills. Biography: Dr. Susan Landry, a nationally recognized expert in early childhood education, is the Founder and Director of the Childrens Learning Institute. Dr. Landrys research into environmental factors that promote early cognitive growth and development led to her development of the framework for the Center for Improving the Readiness of Children for Learning and Education (CIRCLE), which led to the implementation of the Texas Early Education Model (TEEM) in pre-kindergarten classrooms across Texas. She conducts numerous research projects and training activities promoting quality learning environments for young children. She is currently involved in using the knowledge gained from years of studying young children to help promote the national goals of early childhood literacy initiatives.
