Sales Tax Promo Dollars Helps Lift Area Tourism During a question and answer period following an upbeat report on Myrtle Beach area tourism, Brant Branham of Murrells Inlet confirmed his intensions to run for Horry Council, replacing Howard D. Barnard, III, District 5 Councilman of Surfside Beach, who is retiring at the end of next year. Appearing at a noon meeting of the Rotary Club of Murrells Inlet, the chairman of the Myrtle Beach Area Chamber of Commerce board of directors told the Tuesday noon, Oct. 13, crowd Horry Countys one per cent additional sales tax enabled the Grand Strand to show a slight increase in summer tourism, while other east coast tourism destinations registered a decline. Under SC Senate Bill 483, R. 11, Horry is the only county to qualify for the additional sales tax enacted earlier in the year. The monies are spent by the Chamber to boost out-of-state tourism. Recently, Branham, a certified general appraiser of E. F. Hucks, said affordability is one reason many visitors return each year, so ensuring visitors are motivated to travel here is essential to our economic success. He said the current economic downturn is difficult for states like South Carolina. Growing and protecting tourism is paramount throughout the region, he said. One issue we cannot ignore is energy independence. He said geologists indicate 4 billion cubic feet of natural gas may available beyond the SC coastline. When the Commerce honored volunteers earlier this year, he said local citizens exemplified what sacrifice and giving are all about. "Without our more than 500 volunteers, the chamber would not be able to effectively improve the business community and serve our 2,700 members."
