No casualties have been reported at this stage President Hu Jintao has ordered all-out efforts to rescue quake-hit victims. Premier Wen Jiabao was on his way to the hit area to direct the rescue work. Chengdu Military Area Command has dispatched troops to help with disaster relief work in the earthquake-stricken County. The incident took place at 2:28 p.m. on Monday. The epicenter of Wenchuan County lies in the Tibetan-Qiang Autonomous Prefecture of Aba, about 100 kilometers northwest of the provincial capital Chengdu. Tremors were also reported in many other parts of China, including Ningxia, Qinghai, Gansu, Chongqing, Hunan, Hubei, Shanxi, Shaanxi and Shanghai, and as far away as Thailand and Vietnam. Cracks were seen on walls of some residential structures in downtown Chengdu, but no buildings collapsed. The telecom networks in Chengdu and Chongqing were down after the quake. An underground water pipe was broken underneath a viaduct close to Chengdu's southern railway station, and a road was flooded. Meanwhile, another earthquake measuring 3.9 on the Richter scale jolted Tongzhou District in east Beijing minutes later. More than 9,400 victims are trapped in rubble, at least 7,800 people are still missing and more than 26,000 people have been taken to hospital. Two of the worst-hit areas, Wenchuan and Beichuan counties, have experienced hundreds of aftershocks. Sixteen of them were above 5 on the Richter Scale. Over half a million houses have collapsed in the earthquake-hit regions. About 30,000 residents in Wenchuan County are staying in shelters. Most houses in the quake's epicenter were destroyed, with telecommunications and roads totally disrupted. Roads to Wenchuan County are still blocked. In Beichuan County, over seventy percent of houses collapsed. Landslides are threatening to overflow the lower reaches of a local river. Many expressways in Aba Prefecture are blocked. The Sichuan provincial government is trying to restore road traffic. The earthquake also caused temporary suspension of railways. After urgent repair, most railways are now back in operation. Shuangliu Airport in Chengdu has also reopened. Rain began to fall on Tuesday in Sichuan, Chongqing, Gansu and Shaanxi. Meteorologists have forecast more rain, which is expected to make rescue work even more difficult. |

DPRK Premier Meets Chinese FM Pyongyang, July 3 (KCNA) -- Kim Yong Il, premier of the DPRK Cabinet, met and had a friendly talk with Yang Jiechi, Chinese foreign minister, and his party who paid a courtesy call on him at the Mansudae Assembly Hall on Tuesday. On hand were Kim Yong Il, vice-minister of Foreign Affairs of the DPRK, and others and Liu Xiaoming, Chinese ambassador to the DPRK. Chinese FM Visits Friendship Tower Pyongyang, July 3 (KCNA) -- Yang Jiechi, Chinese foreign minister, laid a wreath before the Friendship Tower on Tuesday. Present at the wreath-laying ceremony were the party of the foreign minister and Ambassador Liu Xiaoming and staff members of the Chinese embassy here. On hand were Kim Yong Il, vice-minister of Foreign Affairs of the DPRK, and officials concerned. Amid the playing of wreath-laying music the wreath was laid before the tower in the name of the Chinese foreign minister. The participants looked round the tower after paying a silent tribute to the memory of the fallen fighters of the Chinese People's Volunteers who bravely fought in the Korean front. The Chinese foreign minister made an entry in the visitor's book. |

More than 10,000 quake survivors have been evacuated to a stadium in Mianyang city. Premier Wen Jiabao inspected the city on Tuesday afternoon. He visited Jiuzhou Stadium in Mianyang, where more than 10,000 victims were temporarily resettled. The Premier asked about the victims' situations and gave words of comfort to children orphaned by the disaster. Premier Wen said, "Don't cry! The government will take good care of you. The government will take care of your daily life and your study. You will feel like you are at home. Don't cry. This is a disaster, but you all survived, so live happily with that. If you have any difficulties, the government will come to help you. To the officials: Take good care of their daily life first. These children are suffering the pain of losing their families. Nothing can take away their pain. Comfort them, continue their studies, and make sure their environment is stable." |
