 | Study reveals of LTTE conscription A latest study reveals the enormous hardships encountered by the terrorists due to the thinning of their manpower. The study was conducted by the Jaffna University Lecturers Association for human rights has bared the strategies adopted by the LTTE to increase their manpower. The LTTE outfit has accepted that more than 30 percent of their cadres had been killed. It is conscripting young men and women who have just completed 17 years of age. The study report pointed out that the cadres are almost prisoners of the outfit. LTTE cadres visiting their homes, secure information on youths in near by houses. Thereafter, action was being taken to conscript them within three days. The daughter of the Divisional Secretary of Kilinochchi had been detained while he was going with her on a motor bike about a year ago. The Jaffna University Teachers' Association said there is no information about her since then. It is also revealed that relatives of a Grama Niladhari who did not support the LTTE had been abducted in Kilinochchi. The study disclosed that the LTTE was adopting various strategies to conscript under-aged children. |

The Finnish Defence Forces is a cadre army of 16,500, of which 8,700 professional soldiers (officers), with a standard readiness strength of 34,700 people in uniform (27,300 army, 3,000 navy, and 4,400 air force) at time of peace. The expenditure equals about 1.3% of the GDP. A universal male conscription is in place, under which all men above 18 years of age serve from 6 to 12 months. The defence is based on a large trained reserve. After the end of the Cold War, Finland has reduced its military reserve strength due to a change in the military doctrine and partly due to budget cuts following collapse of the Soviet Union. The military reserve numbers somewhat less than million persons, of whom 357,000 have a crisis-time placement in a military unit. The Finnish Defence Forces is commanded by the Chief of Defence, who is directly subordinated to the President of the Republic in matters related to the military command. The current Chief of Defence is Admiral Juhani Kaskeala. |
