Title:
Chasing ELS F-Unit 600 4/20/2008 Part 1 - Leaving Green Bay
Description:
The Escanaba and Lake Superior Railroad purchased this ex-Milwaukee Road EMD F7 in 2005 from the Wisconsin and Southern Railroad, where it had operated in occasional excursion service as WSOR 71A. Prior to that, it was Wisconsin and Calumet Railroad 96A. I rode excursions pulled by it in both incarnations. Here we see the venerable F-unit in regular freight service, leading ex-RMSX SD9 ELS 1221 out of Green Bay in a lashup straight from the 1950s. First the train crosses the Duck Creek bridge and the Riverview Drive grade crossing, the same location where we just saw CN L536 coming in from the north. Next we see the train crossing Velp Avenue, on the connecting track between the CN Marinette Subdivision and the ELS' parallel ex-Milwaukee Road trackage. The freight cars on the left at the end of the video are in storage on the old main through downtown, which is abandoned between Bond Street and the ex-Milwaukee Road yard. The connector was installed to allow ELS to run straight through to the ex-C&NW North Green Bay Yard, now the hub of GB area operations in the WC/CN eras. Then it's on to Part 2...

![]() | Chasing ELS 501 South - Lena to Green Bay 4/20/2008 After I got bored watching Escanaba and Lake Superior Railroad 1221 and 600 switch Crivitz, I took off back south on US 141 in pursuit of the train bound for Green Bay, with ELS' ex-EMDX/MILW SD40-2 501 leading ex-Conrail GP38 ELS 402. I beat it past the US 141 crossing north of Lena (seen in the second part of the ELS 600 chase video) and set up at the Butterfly Lane railroad crossing between there and Lena. The next scene is the train crossing the Oconto River bridge at Stiles, just south ... |

![]() | Sunday Morning Trains in Green Bay 4/20/2008 I got up early on Sunday morning to railfan the Green Bay area because I knew via a Yahoo! discussion group that ex-WSOR F7 #600 was going to lead the northbound Escanaba and Lake Superior Railroad train out of Green Bay that day. With a 7:00 AM call time, the train can depart anytime between then and about 11. When I arrived at North Green Bay Yard, I immediately went to the west end to see if the ELS looked ready to leave. Nothing doing there, so I headed back to the east end to find ... |

Like 600, 501 was originally a Milwaukee Road unit and is now operating on old MILW tracks for the E&LS, in the paint scheme of an intermediate owner. |
