It is a seaside resort that attract many tourists in the '60s and '70s, and now in the midst of a revival Clacton has a pleasure pier, arcades, a golf course, caravan parks and an airfield. The town and its beaches are still popular with tourists in the Summer, and there is an annual entertainment programme including the Clacton carnival and Clacton Airshow, an aerial display involving historic aircraft such as the Lancaster Bomber, Spitfires, helicopters, and the Red Arrows. Clacton-on-Sea Town Map is served by a bustling shopping area with many of the usual national chains represented -Woolworths, M&S, WH Smiths, Clacton used to be home to the first Butlins sites, but in 1983, it was closed and replaced with the Martello Bay housing estate. Clacton's population has grown hugely, in 1901 it was 7456, 1991 was 45,065 and today stands at over 53000. Clacton-on-Sea - Getting there by car: Escape London and the M25, take the A12 signposted Chelmsford and Colchester, pass the exits to Colchester West and Colchester Central, then join the A120 signposted Harwich and Clacton. From the Midlands and North, follow the A14 (signposted Felistowe/Harwich) until you are south of Ipswich. Join the A12 signposted London, then take the A120 signposted Harwich. From the A120 join the A133 for Clacton. Route Planner By train: Regular trains run to the Essex Sunshine Coast with daily direct services from Clacton to London Liverpool Street.
