New Carissa gets smaller every day.
On Sunday August 10, 2008 crew mwmbwrs of Titan Salvage took another huge piece from the New Carissa on the North Spit of Coos Bay/North Bend. Extremely large and just as stubborn, this piece, on thr right side, closest to the viewer, took roughly 40 minutes for the talented crane operator to dislodge. The voice-over was a description that was being given to a friend on the phone. I wasn't sure it could be heard. Since it was, I left it in. Gene larochelle
New Carissa almost gone -- Barge taking pieces
This clip was taken on Sept 2, 2008. On the left is what remains of the New Carissa. The jack-up barges are full of metal, salvaged from the shipwreck. The metal is being transferred to a floating barge to clear the way for the final stages of the removal of the New Carissa.
Titan taking it down to the water
Titan salvage may have taken off a bigger piece or two from the New Carissa but this 60-70+ ton chunk is the biggest I've seen and I have been watching this salvage operation for a few months. This piece is the 2nd to last, above water level, to go. Titan will be pulling on the massive chains attached to the wreck, with 4 of the 300 ton pullers, to get more of the wreck up to a level where it can be cut on. They still have to remove a 250 ton engine. I hope I'm there. Gene larochelle...

New Carissa Salvage Barges Drop and Leave
The salvage barges which were used as work platforms and crane bases, are beginning the process of dropping to the water, pulling their legs from the sand, and leaving the area. The Titan crew is cleaning the area so that little trace of their use of the area will be left behind.
Mystery Ship Coos Bay Oregon
This wooden ship has been emerging from the dunes due to storm activity through the winter. The Ship name is unknown but is estimated to be around 100 years old.

End Of The New Carissa
What is happening in the video is what is called a Horizontal Chain Cut". A huge chain is strung between two 300-ton "pullers" and wrapped around a very large section of metal, which would have been horizontal to the deck. They crank the chain back and forth using it as a saw. It worked, and the mammoth piece of iron it cut loose must be 50 feet tall.
