![]() | Let's Talk RA September 2006 (Medialink) -- Nearly 70 percent of people being treated for rheumatoid arthritis (RA) still experience pain, stiffness, or fatigue on a daily basis. Patients can help themselves by communicating more effectively with their rheumatologists. Unlike many other diseases, there is no one specific diagnostic test for RA - so clearly describing these symptoms to their physicians is important for proper care. On September 13, 2006, the Arthritis Foundation launched a year-long national campaign called "Let's Talk RA" to educate RA patients on how to effectively communicate with their rheumatologists and how important the doctor-patient relationship is to improving patient care. RA Facts: RA affects about 2.1 million Americans. Studies have shown that timely and appropriate treatment of RA can limit joint damage, which in turn limits loss of movement, decreases ability to work, increases medical costs and the need for potential surgery. RA can cause permanent and disabling damage to cartilage, bones, tendons, and ligaments. Interview with John H. Klippel, M.D., President and CEO of the Arthritis Foundation, and Rheumatologist -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Produced for Arthritis Foundation and Bristol-Myers Squibb |
