![]() | Red Onion Rag (Kidwell/Steventon) - Andrew Barrett This is a rare rag co-written by Lloyd Kidwell (c.1888-1954), a songwriter and pianist who played in a hot dance band and made piano rolls for Vocalstyle, and Roy Steventon, about whom I don't know very much right now. It was originally titled "Powder Rag" and self-published in 1906 by the composers, but then for some reason (probably the huge success of Charles L. Johnson's "Powder Rag" in 1908), they retitled it "Red Onion Rag" and published it again in 1911 with Associated Music ... |

![]() | That Crotchety Old Rag (Ron O'Dell) played by Andrew Barrett One of my earliest compositions, "That Crotchety Old Rag" dates from 1992. I'll admit it's not the greatest of mine, but I like the minor B section and the C section quite a bit... and the 20-bar A section... OK, so I guess it ain't too bad... While hanging out with Tom Brier, Vincent Johnson and David Jasen on Friday night after hours at the 2007 West Coast Ragtime Festival in Sacramento, California, Andrew decided he wanted to play this one for me. Thanks, Andrew! (Actually, this was ... |
![]() | House of Ragtime -- Skunk Hollow Pardon me while I get artsy or something. I thought it would be fun to take video of what it's like to hear the sound of live ragtime music wafting through the dark night during the after- After Hours jam sessions that take place in the house known as "Skunk Hollow" each year during the Sutter Creek Ragtime Festival. The pianist is Monty Suffern -- youtube's "montysuffern". I think you also hear Bonnie Gonzalez on violin before I get to the house, but then as I enter, she's holding her flute ... |

You can also hear it on the CD "Jimmy Blythe: 1924-1931" available from Document Records. "Armour Avenue Struggle", like most of Blythe's own-composed solo recordings and rolls, consists ... |

Guy was instrumental in the formation of the first black musicians' union (nicknamed The Snowball Club), knew and influenced many other composers and performers, and ultimately became the court musician for the King of Haiti. Here it is played in a two-piano duet by John Remmers (right) and Tom Brier, accompanied by Kitty Wilson on washboard. Recorded ... |
![]() | Greasy Spoon Rag sight-read by Andrew Barrett One of my earliest compositions, "Greasy Spoon Rag" was composed in about 1992. I know Andrew (youtube name "kawhackitarag") was not pleased with this performance because there are a few little mistakes here and there, but it's not that bad really. The tune isn't particularly easy to play, and he's still sight-reading it at this point, so it's actually a pretty good job. This was recorded at the 20th annual West Coast Ragtime Festival, in Sacramento, California, Saturday 18 November 2006 ... |
