Antelope Valley California Poppy Reserve

Title:
Antelope Valley California Poppy Reserve

Description:
Wildflower status: 04-20-08 ...is now at, or almost at, it's peak. The season is expected to last to at least mid-May, or maybe the end of May if we get more precipitation. There are still poppy plants with buds while some have already gone to seed, so it will continue for a while and possibly get just a little better! They are having a fantastic year compared to the last two when drought had left the hillsides brown and dry, but it's also not as good as some years in the past that have been off the charts. Overall, it's a great year. The hillsides are blindingly bright orange, with goldfields adding swaths of yellow. Most of the poppies are blooming on the south sides of the hills, but the north slopes have more of a variety of flowers such as owl's clover, forget-me-nots, wild onion, silver puffs, and red maids among poppies and goldfields. Spring is normally very windy which makes poppies curl up, so check the weather first for general conditions. The wind at the reserve is usually exponentially stronger than in Lancaster, so check weather for real-time wind speeds plotted every hour. However, there are so many blooming at this point that it doesn't have too big of an effect on the overall view, and there are still many other beautiful wildflowers among them that bring variety to your walk.
