 | "Say it ain't so, Joe!" : SARAH PALIN & JOE BIDEN - VP debate Joe Biden and Sarah Palin made hard pitches to the middle class at their debate Thursday in St. Louis, accusing each other's campaigns of being out of touch with ordinary voters as they tried to set the momentum for the final five weeks of the presidential race. The stakes were high for both candidates as they entered their only face-off of the campaign. Biden and Palin tried to keep attention on the top of their tickets, defending their own running mates and throwing charges at each other's presidential nominee. But as the debate cycled from energy to the economy to foreign policy, the candidates took calculated shots at each other as they stressed their personal ties to middle America. Palin, who has faced criticism for her light resume and shaky interview performances, attempted to use Biden's long career in the Senate against him, casting him as a Beltway insider. "It's so obvious that I'm a Washington outsider, and someone just not used to the way you guys operate," she said at one point, criticizing him for voting for the Iraq war before speaking out against it. "Americans are craving that straight talk." Speak plainly and colloquially, she described herself as a working mother who understands "what the hurts are" for blue-collar voters. When Biden tried to link John McCain to President Bush, she chided him for looking to the past. "There ya' go again pointing backward," she said at one point. "Now doggone it, let's look ahead." She lamented "East Coast politicians" and the "mainstream media" as she pitched herself as a true "main streeter." OMG Al Qaeda celebrates Michelle Malkin and World Net Daily have made a lot of noise today about the fact the Gwen Ifill, the moderator of Thursday's VP debate, has a new book coming on Inauguration day about Barack Obama and the politics of race -- it's now leading on the front of Drudge. Fox's Greta Van Susteren reports that the McCain campaign didn't know about it. "I am stunned.the campaign (actually both) should have been told before the campaign agreed to have her moderate. It simply is not fair -- in law, this would create a mistrial." But one didn't have to go the lengths of oppo research to find out about a book that was hiding in plain sight on Amazon and the Random house website. Not to mention, Ifill discussed it with Howard Kurtz last month in the Washington Post, in the only profile she's done before the debate. (And I'd imagine someone in the campaign should have read it). To the extent she can carve out any spare time, Ifill is working on a book called "Breakthrough: Politics and Race in the Age of Obama." She focuses on the Democratic nominee and such up-and-coming black politicians as Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick and Newark Mayor Cory Booker. "We're very lazy when we think about race in this country," Ifill says. "We try to put it in a box. It's Jesse versus Al, or Jesse and Al versus everyone else," she says, referring to Jackson and Sharpton. "We love simplistic conflict. There's a whole group of people who have Ivy League degrees and immense accomplishments who actually benefited from the things their parents were fighting for." Regardless, the story's getting major play on cable news, especially Fox. This morning with Bill Hemmer, Fox analyst Juan Williams spoke admirably of Ifill as a journalist but admitted that "it looks like she has some investment" in the outcome of the election, and that "there's a perception problem." The FoxNews.com headline: "VP Debate Moderator Pens Pro-Obama Book." During the debate, Barack Obama said John McCain was RIGHT about things EIGHT times: "I think Senator McCain's absolutely right that we need more responsibility." "Senator McCain is absolutely right that the earmarks process has been abused." "He's also right that oftentimes lobbyists and special interests are the ones that are introducing these requests." "John mentioned the fact that business taxes on paper are high in this country, and hes absolutely right." "John is right we have to make cuts." "Senator McCain is absolutely right that the violence has been reduced as a consequence of the extraordinary sacrifice of our troops and our military families." "John — you're absolutely right that presidents have to be prudent in what they say." "Senator McCain is absolutely right, we cannot tolerate a nuclear Iran."
