The ancient practices in Ethiopian agriculture may be changing these days as agriculture becomes more productive. Ethiopians are one of the earliest people to adopt the plow...perhaps even the earliest. However, we also seem to be one of the last to abandon it. Enjoy it while it lasts...this short is taken on the road to Awassa where we encountered farmers at work, in the traditional way. ![]() | Fishing in the Amazon with barbasco root Deep in the Amazon basin, we joined the Waorani people as they used this special root to asphyxiate fish in the stream so that we could easily collect them. The barbasco root (Lonchocarpus urucu) releases a toxin that asphyxiates the fish so that it is easy for us to collect. It doesn't kill them and leaves no toxins in the meat. The toxins soon dissolve and the remaining fish rehabilitate and the stream returns to normalcy. |
