Harvesting and processing the Black Walnut. Another way of taking the husks off is to put the nuts in your driveway and let your car tires do the job. That's kinda slow though, and this way you get the husks off as you collect them. Black walnuts are not farmed commercially, because no one wants to wait 40 years for a profitable crop. Commercial black walnuts are bought from farmers who gather them from wild trees. Unfortunately, the wood from a good sized tree can be worth thousands of dollars, so it is rare to find a black walnut tree that has achieved great maturity. The power company cut one here that was huge, and rotted from within, however I counted about 350 rings in it.
