Global Report-23-March-2009
Description:
http://www.instablogs.com/ Kenya elections: tribes and politics The emerging trend in which politicians from both sides of Kenya's grand coalition have been retreating to tribal alliances and preaching hatred has raised questions on whether the country is on the path to reconciliation. Political observers have warned that should the trend continue unabated, the nation is likely to slide to the hostility and tribal animosity witnessed after the last General Election. This comes at a time when the US has decided to crack whip on corrupt ministers, a few days ago the US government issued a travel ban against a minister implicated in graft recently. And even though the US has not explained to the Kenyan government on its move against the undisclosed minister, Kenyans are very happy and of the idea that such gestures should also be extended to all ministers implicated in graft cases. We fully appreciate steps taken by the US since impunity has proved heard to fight here in Kenya. Brazil congress to upgrade cyber laws In 2006, after thousands of cases involving allegations of pedophilia against the social network Orkut, the Brazilian Congress found it necessary to 'upgrade' the Brazilian Penal Code. The investigations made by state police and federal police were often compromised because they lacked legal mechanisms to seek evidence against the accused. The involvement of Congress in this issue was essential to an operation last year in which federal police could find and dismantle one of the largest networks of pedophiles in the world who act in Brazil. Violation of privacy of thousands of users of the Internet was essential for the involved in this network could be found. However, a new problem may have arisen: abuse of power. The same way that new and efficient process to facilitate police investigations have been created, mechanisms should be created to monitor and regulate the actions of the police in order to keep the privacy of millions of internet users in Brazil." Women in Pakistans Swat district After the peace deal in Swat in the form of Nizam-I-adl girls have started going to the school again and there been significant improvement in the areas overall peace situation. But women have lost the courage to go out shopping as Taliban has declared it as un-Islamic for women to be seen in market place. The absence of customers has caused a sharp decline in the businesses of people who deal in cosmetics, garment and accessories of womens use. Most female doctors have also left the area due to threats from Taliban leaving female patients of the area at a loss. There is an urgent for further negotiations between the government to solve the problems of women in Swat and allow them the freedom they deserve. Red Sea-Dead Sea Conveyance water project Jordan is facing the new water as it is trying hard to keep the Dead Sea alive yet it is scared of the consequences the proposed plan may cause. Proposed plan entails linking the Dead Sea with the Red Sea. Such a step could actually feed that sea. However, environmentalists are raising doubts about the plans as they are worried about mixing water of both the seas. This could affect the characteristics and composition of the Dead Sea which are known to be special and not known to be present in any of the other water bodies. Egypt has also expressed skepticism about such a step as it worries about its affect on the Red Sea which lies in between parts of Egypt and Jordan. http://www.instablogs.com/
