The worst hit areas are those where service providers are unable or afraid to work. One of the poorest areas in the capital, Baghdad, is Sadr City. Once a slum area under Saddam Hussein, Sadr City is now a stronghold for the Shia militia, the Mehdi army. Hoda Abdel Hamid reports on people living on the edge of the overcrowded borough, home to two million people driven to increasingly desperate measures by poverty. |
