What Women Want: A Fix For Health Care Survey Results Embargoed Dr. Jim King, President, American Academy Of Family Physicians New Poll Shows "Patient-Centered Medical Home" Concept Meets Women's Health Care Expectations The national debate over the future of the American health care system continues to rage. But, a new study from the American Academy of Family Physicians conducted by Harris Interactive® examined what women want. The study, Fixing Health Care: What Women Want, found that American women who are primary health care decision makers for themselves and/or their family feel the current system is difficult to navigate and leads to fragmented care: • 43% said they have had to fill out multiple complete patient histories • 26% said they have had to inform one medical provider of another's recommendation or diagnosis • 16% have had to carry lab reports, x-rays and other test results to another office • 11% have received contradictory recommendations from different medical providers • Nearly 10% had to repeat lab tests unnecessarily because of lack of communication between providers. The study found that what women want is a health care system in which they and their families can get timely, convenient services, and receive coordinated follow-up care if they require hospitalization or care from other physicians. These are components of the "patient-centered medical home," wherein the patient is cared for by a physician who leads the practice team that coordinates all aspects of the patient's health --emergencies, preventive and chronic care. Available to discuss this innovative model of health care, the benefits, and how family physicians are working to provide it, Dr. Jim King, president of the American Academy of Family Physicians, also will offer results from the survey on what American women want in the way of medical care for their families. About the talent: Jim King, M.D., is president of the American Academy of Family Physicians. He has been a practicing family physician for more than 20 years in Selmer, Tenn., and also serves as volunteer faculty at the University of Tennessee Center for Health Sciences in Memphis. As a family physician who has cared for thousands of patients of all ages, Dr. King is sensitive to the many obstacles that make primary medical care difficult to obtain with ease in today's fragmented health care system. As a husband and a father, Dr. King understands the obstacles women encounter as they try to obtain health care for their families. He has been featured on national network news several times in the past year speaking about a variety of family health topics.
