Title:
Lehigh River Rafter Rescue
Description:
3:15 PM: 06/20/09 (Carbon County - Bowmanstown, PA) - Pennsylvania Fish & Boat Commission officers rescue rafter tangled in three rafts in the Lehigh River. The river was running high as a rafting company guided it's party down the river. In a section of rapids between Parryville and Bowmanstown. A raft from Pocono Whitewater Tours got tied up with a semi-submerged tree (log) and was hit by two other rafts. A 48-year-old woman went into the water and was trapped in the three overturned rafts. The Pennsylvania Fish & Boat Commission was the first rescue boat in the water. Officer Christman did the operating of the small rescue boat. Officer Lupacchini did the rescue of the rafter. After the rafter was rescued the PF&BC rescue boat took on water with the rescued female rafter in the boat. The rescue boat flooded and capsized. Now all three were in the fast moving Lehigh River. Lupacchini held tight to the rescued rafter and officer Christman was on his own to make it to shore. Local fire departments fished Lupacchini and the rescued rafter from the water. Christman was rescued by passing rafters and taken to shore. Fire personnel used ropes and basket to get the injured rafter up a steep hill side. Responding to the rescue were fire departments from Parryville, Bowmanstown, Lehighton, East Penn, Walnutport, Slatington, Lehigh Township, Whitehall and Northampton. The Lehighton, Palmerton and NOVA ambulances assisted at the scene. Police from East Penn and Franklin Townships were on scene. The Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission has taken over the investigation of the incident from the East Penn Township police. The rescued rafter was transported to the Lehigh Valley hospital and released later the same day. The scene was cleared at 7:08 PM.
