Some Burnsville businesses will benefit from a Minnesota Job Skills Partnership grant administered through the Department of Employment and Economic Development. Through the grant program and a partnership with Dakota County Technical College Dimation and Goodrich Sensor Systems will be able to provide IPC certification for soldering technology. Representatives from partnering organizations signed the forms to establish the grant program on Feb. 18 at DCTC in Rosemount. The grant program will provide over $300,000 worth of training and assistance aimed at building skills for employees in growing industries. It is estimated that as many as 500 employees may receive training. Currently there more positions than trained technicians. Two other metro area firms, Ayrshire and Minnetronix will also receive training from the grant program. All four companies are expected to see growth in 2009 despite the downturn in the economy. Weather: Tonight: Colder, mostly to partly cloudy with up to an inch of snow accumulation lows around 5 above. Tomorrow: Partly cloudy, highs 15 to 20. Kudos to Burnsville High School seniors Karly Harrod and Matt Walker who recently received the school's Triple "A" award. The award recognizes senior students' outstanding accomplishments in academics, arts and athletics. To be considered for the award seniors must have a "B" or better grade point average and participate in fine arts activities and athletics sponsored by the Minnesota State High School League. Both Harrod and Walker will now advance to the state level where four four-year $1,000 scholarships will be given out. The public is invited to the Burnsville-Eagan-Savage School District's Early Childhood Programs Family Fun Night, tomorrow at 5:30 p.m. at the Diamondhead Education Center. The Family Fun Night Science Safari is an event especially for children from birth to pre-kindergarten age and their parents. The cost is $5 per family who are pre-registered or $8 at the door. The cost of dinner is an extra $3 per person. You can even register online. For information call 952-707-4150 or go to www.isd191.org.
