Toronto Discoveries - Broadview and Queen Street East

Description:
The fact that it's already late October (Oct 28) didn't deter me from another bike ride. So at about 10:30 am this morning I linked up with my friend Randy at the Taylor Park Bridge in the Don Valley. We cycled down on the west side of the River on a packed dirt trail that is quite reminiscent of a roller coaster, with all its exhilarating curves and turns. Just south of the Leaside Bridge we arrived at the makeshift dirt riding park that has been created in the middle of the woods by a group of unknown volunteers. We came across five young guys in their mid to late teens, all experts in dirt biking and terrain jumping. We spent a good half hour watching the guys jumping from hill to hill and doing 180 degree turns in the air and one of the guys told me that they usually ride in the skate park near Wallace Emerson (High School). This was their first outing on a dirt trail and they really impressed us with their jumps (check out my footage on Youtube and search for "travelandtransitions", you should see some footage of their advanced riding skills). Then we continued on southwards and came up at Riverdale Farm where we connected with my good friend Shauna. The three of us checked out the various farm animals at the farm (all accessible for free), including the chickens, horses, cows, a rather sad-looking donkey and some very affectionate goats in the barn. They sure liked their head scratched... Off to Queen Street East for brunch where we had an absolutely scrumptious meal at "Le Cafe Vert" , a place that features lots of vegan and vegetarian meals. My spinach/bacon frittata and the passionfruit creme brule were to die for. Shauna's mango chocolate parfait looked pretty awesome too. After a little excursion back towards the Queen and Broadview area and a ride past all the funky cafes and boutiques on Queen East and recently gentrified Leslieville, I rode home on Gerrard Street through Little India. This colourful neighbourhood is always an interesting destination. A perfect day for a bike ride... Check out some of my other travel stories and articles at www.travelandtransitions.com.

Toronto Discoveries - Exploring the Liberty Grand
This video clip was taken on September 29, 2007. On this gorgeous early fall day I decided to explore Toronto's Western waterfront on my inline skates. I parked my car at Marie Curtis Park and bladed eastwards, past some of the condo developments next to the mouth of the Humber River. After Sunnyside Park I skated into the CNE grounds and checked out some of the classical early 20th century architecture there. Following a brief rest in the sun west of Ontario Place I headed back, took my ...
Toronto Travel: Toronto Biking Tour 2007 - Entering Riverdale Farm
Thisvideo clip was taken during my biking tour on July 7, 2007. I rode from Toronto's east end through Riverdale, stopped for a brief visit at Riverdale Farm and the adjacent Necropolis, then continued on through picturesque Cabbagetown, past Yonge Street on to Queens Park and the University of Toronto campus. I had a little lunch on Baldwin Street, a really cool street with lots of different ethnic restaurants, and then cycled on towards the Rogers Centre, Toronto's baseball stadium with ...
Toronto Discoveries - Specialty stores - St. Lawrence Market
The St. Lawrence Market area is one of Toronto's most historic areas. On a Saturday in late October I started my discoveries at the Gooderham Building, also called the "Flatiron Building, one of Toronto's most well-known landmarks. Similar to it's New York City namesake it is a triangular building, but it was built in 1892, 10 years before its NYC counterpart. Front Street in Toronto east of Yonge Street is the location of some historic Victorian townhouses that today house a variety of ...

Toronto Travel: Buskerfest - Jilly's & the Real Jerk (Queen Str. )
Thisvideo clip was taken on August 26, 2007 during my cycling trip to Buskerfest, a great street festival that brings together musicians, acrobats, jugglers and other street performers. I cycled in from Toronto's east end through the Tayler Creek Park system, headed south through the Don Valley, made a quick stop at the Allen Gardens Conservatory as well as at St. James Cathedral until I finally reached the festival area which ran along Front Street all the way from Jarvis to Yonge Street ...
