Description:
Area students stand out Orono Middle School eighth-grader Andrew Casey has been selected as a semifinalist and will compete in the 2009 Minnesota Geographic Bee. It will be held Friday, April 3, at St. Cloud University. Bees were held for fourth- through eighth-grade students in schools throughout Minnesota to determine each school's Geographic Bee winner. School-level winners then took a qualifying test, which they submitted to the National Geographic Society. The students with the top 100 scores were invited to compete at the state level. The state winner will receive $100, an atlas and a trip to Washington, D.C., where he/she will represent Minnesota in the national finals at the National Geographic Society headquarters May 19-20. The national winner will receive a $25,000 college scholarship and a lifetime membership in the society. The winner will also travel (along with one parent or guardian), all expenses paid, to the Galapagos Islands with "Jeopardy!" host Alex Trebek and the "Jeopardy!" Clue Crew. Trebek will moderate the televised national finals on May 20. Wayzata West Middle School student Roy Zhao took second place in the 2009 Math Counts competition. Also placing in the top four were Jacob Neis and eighth grader from Chapel Hill Academy, Eden Prairie Central Middle School eighth grader Max Wang and St. John the Evangelist seventh grader Ian McMeeking. The four students will form the state team that will represent Minnesota and travel to Disneyworld in Florida, May 7-10, to compete in the national MATHCOUNTS competition against teams from throughout the United States. The MATHCOUNTS program pays for the students and coach to travel to National event. In addition to his individual achievement, Zhao and his Wayzata teammates took second place team honors in the competition. Wayzata resident Maddy Thoele was crowned MISS MINNESOTA International 2009 in a ceremony held March 15 in St. Cloud. Thoele will now compete with 50 other state winners for the title of Miss International 2009 July 24th and 25th at the Northshore of Performing Arts, in Skokie, Illinois. Maddy's platform is "Children's Cancer Research". She plans to use her title to heighten awareness about how important research is to fight cancer in children and how research can help increase the survival of those children.

Pied in the Face
It happened in the summer of 2005 at UNC Summer School. I was innocently looking at my friend's palm pilot when my friend Nina crept up behind me and pied me in the face with a plate of whipped cream while my other friend Lindsey videotaped everything. This eventually lead to full fledged food fight right in the middle of our dorm room.
