Ruins of the Harrisville paper factory include jersey-stone, lime-mortared buildings with brick trimmings. Two 13 inch thick arches still stand. An artesian well still pumps iron water above ground. The site is located to the south and southeast of the dam at Harrisville Lake. Videotaped May 28, 1987. Harrisville timeline: 1750 - 1825 "The Skit Mill" was situated half a mile away. 1795 Slitting mill at confluence of Wading River, Oswego Branch and Hospitality Creek. Isaac Potts, Philadelphia. 1795 - 1880 McCartysville 1815 Paper plant. New York Machine Manufacturing Company. Canal dug from Oswego Branch provided power. Wading River Canal Manufacturing Co. dammed Wading River sluicing water through canal to plant. 1832 Howard Harris married McCarty's daughter and lived at Harrisville. Richard Harris, founder, lived in eleven-room mansion. William Harris managed the Philadelphia store. Benjamin Harris managed the New York City store at 55 Beckman St. The paper plant processed salt hay and rags imported from Philadelphia and New York City to produce heavy paper and boards. Thick brown paper finished in drying sheds. Main Street maple-lined with ornamental iron-upright gaslights. Herman Glassworks
The site where the glassworks once stood at Herman City,(now Green Bank), NJ. It was built in 1869 by the firm of Lumen B. Wing and Charles W. Wapler of Brooklyn, NY.
