62- The Monster of the Columbia River- 1st Sighting

Description:
Much of indigenous myths have long been thought to only be that- just stories that someone made up, while the written tales of the bible are staunchly thought to be all fact by some. Some myths are an illusion, some myths are reality, but most fall somewhere in between with some truth and some fantasy. In 1997 I first encountered what I originally thought was someone's abandoned pet alligator while flatwater kayaking in Central Washington on the Columbia River. Since then I have seen yet another one of the animals, and am convinced that this is probably the mythological creature- Ogopogo or the Monster of the Columbia River. One story is told throughout the Columbia by Native Americans- that there was a bad monster- or one of these creatures- that were killing people and eating up all the animals. So Coyote tricks the monster into swallowing him up too, builds a fire under his heart, kills the bad monster, and saves all the people and animals. Ever since when Coyote killed the bad monster- these creatures still live in the river- but there is none that do any harm to people. This story is told throughout the Columbia River people, but with variations on exactly where the bad monster was killed at. Some say Wishram or near there, some say near Entiat, some say other places too. Maybe every group that heard and told the story modified it to have their familiar geographical places in it- and there was only one bad monster and coyote (or more likely some person whose name has long been lost) killed it once. If the Monster of the Columbia River of myth and what I saw is one in the same, it is quite possible that there were "rogue" monsters out there that had tendencies much like crocodiles and alligators since they might be closely related. Just because we don't currently have scientific evidence to support what people have said in the past doesn't make what they said untrue. It just means we don't have the evidence to back up what they said.
